contour lines:
How can we "see" better as artists?

August 2016

Artists are expert "see-ers". In order to be better artists, students had to learn to draw what they see and not what they know. Students began their journey as artists by making contour line drawings. Students replicated portraits both known and unknown from magazine references. Throughout their journey, students began to break their "symbol system of childhood". An example of the "symbol system" is drawing an almond shape for the eyes. Through observation, students learned that facial features come in all different shapes and sizes. Many a-ha moments were made during this lesson. Please enjoy their hard work!

the value of values:
hybrid animal drawings

September 2016

Students continued their artist journey by making contour line drawings of hybrid animals. After mastering the contour line, students learned the value of values. The students studied different types of shading techniques such as stippling, blending, cross-hatch and hatching. They got their creative juices flowing by picking three animals that they wished to morph together into one cohesive hybrid animal. Inspired by the surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, the students had the creative freedom to create a fantasy world with their animals.
